Chapter 18
The hours following the Hyper beast’s rampage flew by as the citizens of Last Light attempted to restore order. Ike spent a good chunk of that time bargaining with the burly miners over how they were handling the new captives.

Smoke lingered at the edges of the Last Light train station courtyard, which had been nearly destroyed during the fight with the overzealous Enforcer.
Ready to bring the electrifying adventures of Lees to a bookshelf near you? Now you can!
Ike was more or less running blind through the smoke-filled alleys of the mining town. Ash coated his throat and sinuses, half-choking him as he struggled to hold Meshi over his shoulder. All he could really hear was the heavy sound of his own breathing...
Eating a live grenade, that’s what it felt like. Miniature explosions of superheated matter followed its trajectory down her esophagus and into her stomach, searing the linings of Lees’ internal organs along the way.
The mine had exploded. Ka-boom. Destroyed. Gone. Their livelihood, Last Light’s purpose, now up in smoke and flames. Disintegrated by the interlopers, those thugs in armor surging through the tiers of the city like a plague to destroy everything they’d worked for.
An immensely powerful form of blood red Hyper.
A hazy stone that naturally glows with a soft yellow light commonly found in the mines of the Oppri.
The Enforcer’s roar was still echoing around the square when an explosion boomed from somewhere near the west side of Last Light. Rumbling aftershocks hit them all at once, followed by an ominous column of smoke rising from the second tier near the food district.
Windows and doors shuttered and bolted across Last Light as Lees and Ike raced through the alleyways toward the town’s central thoroughfare. The streets were eerily empty. Those who didn’t want to cross paths with the cutlass, or who knew better than to challenge their authority...
There was a strange energy in the secret bunker. Midge and Elyii were staring slack-jawed at Lees. Jez was staring at Ike with a look that could melt steel beams. Ike looked at Lees with a look of wonder, as if she were a mortal turned god.
Lees had never wished for a lamp or light box more in her life. What little light came from the rapidite-dust torches illuminated no more than three paces, and they were few and far between.

To celebrate nine awesome chapters we thought we'd drop a new piece of art. This is a retelling of the first site banner by our friend and long time collaborator Matt Owen. It's chock full of fun details and is a closer vision of what we image Last Light to be.

A tiny, angry voice in the back of Lees’ mind began to scream, to fight, to buck against the assault. It grew louder and angrier until it consumed her, so aggressive it swept the pain to the side. Lees took a deep breath and bellowed, “GET AWAY FROM ME!”

Every word made Lees’ blood boil. Anger surged through her body, circulating with each heartbeat. She watched him saunter forward, his hair turning almost green in the pale Rapidite light, and it was as if she could finally see him, the real Meshi.

Retracing their route through the natural drift and back into the mine proper took less time than Lees expected. She kept one hand over the front pocket of her pouch so her fingertips could graze the edges of the stone through the canvas.

Lees bolted back out into the cavern. The multicolored swirls flashing around her now seemed dim compared to the light she sought. Her eyes snapped to the right – there! Brilliant red bounced around as Meshi sprinted toward the cave wall with the stone clenched in his hand.

Losing track of time down in the mines wasn’t unusual, but the pair had been following the light for so long that Lees wondered if they’d stayed past their shift end.

When Lees and Meshi arrived at the ready room, the equipment manager didn’t even bother looking up from their work to acknowledge them.

The Eye of Mite’s kitchen was unlike any kitchen in Last Light. It had once been a standard, galley-style kitchen that churned out the usual bar fare, but when Jez bought the saloon she’d retrofitted it to house something special: The Great Mechanized Burger Maker.
